เครื่อง X-Ray Inspection System อาศัยหลักการทำงานโดยใช้คลื่นรังสี X-Ray ผ่านทะลุวัตถุที่ต้องการตรวจสอบหาสิ่งปนเปื้อน โดยความหนาแน่นที่แตกต่างของวัตถุโดยเทียบขนาดจากภาพที่เครื่องจักรใช้ชอฟต์แวร์ประมวณผลออกมาในสีที่แตกต่างกัน ซึ่งจะทำให้เครื่องจักรแยกออกว่าส่วนไหนคือสิ่งปนเปื้อนและส่วนไหนเป็นชิ้นงานของตัวมันเอง ดังนั้นเครื่อง X-Ray จึงมีความสามารถในส่วนของการตรวจจับสิ่งปนเปื้อนได้มากกว่าเครื่องตรวจจับโลหะ อาทิเช่น เม็ดหิน กรวด เศษแก้ว เศษยางที่ต้องมีความหนาแน่นในระดับนึง หรือกระดูกสัตว์/ก้างปลาในเนื้อสัตว์หรือเนื้อปลา อีกทั้งเครื่อง X-Ray ยังมีความสามารถที่จะทำงานตรวจสอบได้กว้างกว่าเครื่องตรวจจับโลหะ อาทิเช่น การตรวจหาโลหะหรือวัตถุอื่นที่ปนเปื้อนในอาหารขณะบรรจุในถุงฟอยอลูมิเนียม หรือกระป๋องอลูมิเนียมได้
